Exercise Physiology

One-to-one, evidence-based exercise prescription from an Accredited Exercise Physiologist based in Kensington, delivered in your home, your local gym or wherever you already move, right across the Perth metro.

What an Accredited Exercise Physiologist does

An Accredited Exercise Physiologist is a university-qualified allied health professional. Exercise Physiologists specialise in prescribing and delivering exercise-based programs for the management and prevention of chronic disease and injury.

In practice that means the assessment comes first. How you move, what you can currently tolerate, what has already been tried and what you actually want to get back to all shape the program before a single exercise is prescribed.

Accredited Exercise Physiology is a specialised clinical profession requiring extensive university-level training in exercise prescription, physiology, pathology and rehabilitation. This recognised allied health qualification allows eligible sessions to be claimed through private health extras, Medicare chronic condition management plans, DVA, NDIS and workers' compensation.

We help those with:

  • Musculoskeletal conditions: rehabilitation for injuries and conditions affecting the muscles, joints, bones, tendons, ligaments and other connective tissues.
  • Chronic and complex health conditions: management and prevention of conditions including diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, arthritis, cancer, heart disease, obesity, chronic pain and respiratory conditions.
  • Mental health conditions: tailored exercise programs that support overall wellbeing and help with conditions including depression, anxiety, PTSD and stress.
  • Disability: improving functional capacity, quality of life and independence, and promoting overall health and wellbeing for people living with physical, intellectual and psychosocial disabilities.

Areas of clinical interest

We work with a broad range of conditions. These are the three we see most, and the ones we have built the most experience around.

Hip, knee and lower back

The regions that most often stop people doing ordinary things: stairs, driving, sleeping, getting off the floor. Programs target the strength and control those joints have lost, and progress is measured against what you can actually do again.

Pre- and post-operative rehabilitation

The stronger you go into musculoskeletal surgery, the better the months after it tend to go. We build capacity beforehand where there is time, then rebuild it afterwards within the surgeon's protocol — at home, in the weeks when travelling is hardest.

Acute and persistent pain

Pain that has lasted days behaves differently from pain that has lasted years, and the two need different plans. Our founder lives with Ankylosing Spondylitis and has managed his own persistent pain through exercise, which shapes how carefully we pace sessions.

You don't need to travel. We come to you

Motus is a fully mobile service based in Kensington and covering the Perth metropolitan area, allowing sessions to take place in the environment that best supports your goals. Whether that is at home, in a gym or out in the community, we adapt each session to the space, equipment and activities that matter most to you.

In your own home

The most common setting. We bring the equipment and work within your home environment, allowing exercises to be adapted to your space, mobility needs and everyday activities.

At your local gym

If you already have a gym membership, sessions can take place there using the equipment available. We can also meet at a nearby recreation centre where appropriate, making it easier to access the equipment and space needed for your program.

Out in your community

A local park, pool, walking track or workplace. If your goal is linked to a specific environment or activity, that can often be the best place to build the strength, confidence and capacity needed for it.

What happens in your first session

The initial assessment usually runs a little longer than a follow-up because it takes the time to understand the full picture before your program begins. We discuss your history, current symptoms, goals and relevant medical considerations, complete objective testing, and then work with you to decide on the most appropriate treatment plan moving forward.

  • We discuss your history and goals

We discuss why you are attending, your current symptoms or pain points, your medical history, medications, previous treatment, current supports and what you want to achieve. Bring any scans, reports or referral letters that may be relevant.

  • We conduct a physical assessment

Objective testing is selected based on your presentation and may include measures of movement, joint range, strength, balance, functional capacity or relevant patient-reported outcome measures. This gives us a clear baseline to guide treatment and monitor progress.

  • We agree on your treatment plan

We talk through the assessment findings together and agree on the most appropriate approach moving forward, including the key priorities for your exercise program, session frequency and any other recommendations that may support your goals.

  • We start your program

Your individualised exercise program is then introduced and guided through in your follow-up sessions, with ongoing coaching, technique correction and progression as your capacity, confidence and symptoms change.
