GP referral required · DVA billed directly

Exercise Physiology for DVA Gold and White Card holders

Veterans holding a DVA Gold or White Card can be referred by their GP for exercise physiology. Where the referral is accepted, DVA is billed directly — there is nothing to pay on the day and nothing to claim back.

How DVA referrals work

Your GP completes a D904 referral for allied health services. For Gold Card holders the referral can cover any clinically necessary condition; for White Card holders it needs to relate to a condition DVA has already accepted.

Referrals run for a set period and a set number of sessions, and can be renewed by your GP when that period ends. We report back to your referring GP as required, so the plan you are working through stays visible to the people managing the rest of your care.

The programs themselves are built around what you want to keep doing — staying on your feet at home, managing a long-standing back or knee condition, keeping up with grandchildren, getting back to the shed or the garden. Sessions happen in your own home or local gym, which removes the travel that often makes regular appointments hard to sustain.

Who this suits

  • DVA Gold Card holders needing rehabilitation for any clinically necessary condition
  • White Card holders where the condition being treated has been accepted by DVA
  • Veterans with musculoskeletal conditions affecting their strength, mobility or day-to-day function
  • Anyone recovering from orthopaedic surgery who would rather do the supervised work at home
  • Veterans for whom the travel has become the hardest part of staying consistent

The process

Four stages, from the referral your GP completes through to its renewal.

Book an assessment

Your GP completes a D904 referral for allied health services. Call first if you are not sure it covers exercise physiology — we will tell you exactly what to ask for.

A longer first appointment covering the condition being treated, what it stops you doing, your goals, and a physical assessment of movement, strength and function.

DVA is billed directly, so there is nothing to pay on the day. The program is built around what you want to keep doing, not around a clinic's equipment.

We report progress to your referring GP. When the referral period ends, your GP can renew it if continuing is the right call.
